New English Language Requirements For 485 And Student Visa From March 23, 2024
The Australian Government has updated the English Language Requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas, which were detailed in their Migration Strategy released on December 11, 2023. These changes apply to all visa applications submitted on or after March 23, 2024.
The Migration Strategy emphasizes how these reforms aim to enhance the educational experience for international students in Australia and better prepare them for the workforce, especially if they intend to apply for a graduate visa after completing their studies.
For Temporary Graduate visas (TGV):
- The minimum required score on the IELTS test has been raised from 6.0 to 6.5 (or equivalent), with a minimum score of 5.5 for each test component.
- The validity period for the English language test has been reduced from 3 years to 1 year. Applicants for TGVs must now provide evidence of completing an English Language test within 1 year before the visa application date.
For Student visas:
- The minimum required score on the IELTS test has been increased from 5.5 to 6 (or equivalent).
- The minimum score required to enroll in packaged ELICOS courses has been raised from 4.5 to 5.0.
- There are no changes for students solely studying English through ELICOS.
- Students undertaking university foundation or pathway programs offering reputable English language training must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 (or equivalent).
With the increase in English language requirements for students enrolled in vocational education and higher education courses, similar adjustments have been made for those taking packaged ELICOS courses. This ensures a smooth transition into their primary course with the necessary English proficiency.
